IST (arrived 11am)
Kay describes IST. 3rd year, each year completely diff. High turnover of students (little pyp exp) Central idea developed by students Inquiry points developed by students In groups, students go through inquiry points
How do other schools address issue of students who show up with no pyp experience? Newbies took a modified approach with same goal. Products by ELLs more guided, relevance. Mentor program to help out exhibition groups. More on mentors. Invitations...drink and food. Matched mentors with interest areas after issues and lines of inquiry established. Mentors developed a learning with others perspective. (not learning by teachers) Mentors develop different skills in students i.e. time management, business e-mail, diff approaches/perspectives, etc. Parents as mentors? uhh...tends to take away for student-created work...parents can do it for them Teachers comfortable with cognitive dissonance, parents not so much. :)
Cut off dates for acceptance? Yes, but not adhered to.
Chinese and exhibition? UNIS language teachers took on central idea. Chinese teachers/schedules can find it difficult to meet exhibition needs of students.
Video reflections. Sit in front of camera and reflect on learning experience. Archive vids.
Journals What is the exhibition? good kick-off question Do students have meta language? i.e. PYP, UOI, inquiry process... * Learning to learn week...no pressure to jump into UOI, no testing. explore this idea
